# Why You’re Sabotaging Your Own Joy (And How to Stop)
Ever notice how some days you wake up fired up… and by noon you’re ready to crawl back under the covers?
I was studying Philippians recently (don’t worry, I’m not going full preacher mode) and stumbled across something that rocked me. The root word for joy? It’s “chara.” Comes from “charis” — which means grace.
Think about that for a second. The joy we chase through closed deals and bank deposits? That’s not real joy at all. Real joy flows from grace. From knowing who we are in Christ.
And here’s the kicker — Paul wrote about joy while chained to a Roman guard.
## The Four Joy Killers That Wreck Everything
**First: Circumstances**
We think joy comes when life’s going well. When we’re closing deals and the phone’s ringing with motivated sellers. But circumstances are the biggest liar in the room.
I’ve had my best days when everything was falling apart. And my worst days when everything looked perfect on paper.
**Second: People**
Nothing kills your buzz faster than someone else’s mood. You call your buddy excited about a deal… and they respond with “Oh, that’s cool” like you just told them about your lunch.
Here’s what I learned: Stop looking for approval from people who don’t understand your world.
**Third: Performance-Based Religion**
This one’s sneaky. It’s the voice that whispers you need to do more to earn God’s love. Try harder. Be better. Perform your way into righteousness.
Bull.
At salvation, 100% of Christ lives in you. You don’t get more God when you’re good. You don’t lose God when you mess up. Done deal.
**Fourth: Worry and Anxiety**
The biggest thief of all. Those 3 AM stare-at-the-ceiling sessions where your brain won’t shut off. Finances. Health. Relationships. Future deals.
But here’s what Paul said: “Don’t be anxious about anything.”
Easy to say… until your mom gets diagnosed with cancer like mine did recently.
## When Everything Falls Apart
Few months ago, Mom told me about the cancer. I could’ve spiraled. Could’ve worried myself sick about outcomes I couldn’t control.
Instead, I prayed. Gave it to God. Found that peace that doesn’t make sense but somehow guards your heart anyway.
Update: They got it all. She’ll need some treatment, but she’s going to be fine.
God could’ve allowed a different outcome. His choice either way. But when I released control… there was this lightness I can’t explain.
## The Real Source
Here’s what I wish someone told me years ago: Christ himself is the source of joy. Not favorable circumstances. Not perfect relationships. Not crushing your competition.
Just Christ.
Joy isn’t something you manufacture by thinking positive thoughts or grinding harder. It flows from knowing who you belong to and what’s already been accomplished on your behalf.
The Roman guard got to hear the gospel because Paul was in chains. Believers came to Christ because of his imprisonment. Paul counted it all joy… because Christ was being preached.
That’s the perspective shift that changes everything.
## Your Next Move
No matter what’s happening in your world right now — deals falling through, sellers not calling back, money getting tight — you can find joy. Not happiness. Joy.
It’s not dependent on your next commission check. It flows from your identity in Christ and the grace that’s already yours.
That’s the kind of foundation that gives you resilience to push through when everyone else quits.
